In the battle against obesity, scientists are learning how to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by about 50%.
A new study inNew England Journal of Medicinefound that people who took a drug that helps reduce blood pressure and weight in combination with lifestyle changes were more likely to have heart attacks and strokes in later life.
"The data suggests that people who take medications that help them lose weight may be more likely to be diagnosed with a heart attack or stroke," said lead author Dr. Joshua B. Goldstein, MD, professor of ophthalmology and director of the Division of Urology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
"Therefore, these drugs may be used as a screening test for screening for an overweight person who is not currently overweight, and for screening for diabetes."
The Food and Drug Administration approved Nexium in 2004 for the treatment of.
The study, published in the July issue ofArchives of Internal Medicine, looked at about 6,500 people who had used the drug for at least three years and had weight loss of at least 10 percent of their initial weight.
People who took the drug who lost weight on average by about 2.3 pounds. They were also at increased risk of death from heart disease and stroke.
People who took the drug who were not dieters, took other weight-loss medications such as diet pills or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or used alcohol and other drugs with sedative and anti-anxiety properties.
"People who were dieters were less likely to have heart attacks and strokes compared to people who were dieters," said Dr. Goldstein. "This suggests that the effects of these drugs may be reduced by lifestyle changes and dietary changes."
The researchers said they wanted to see if the drugs reduced the risk of heart attacks by more than 50 percent, so they compared people who were dieters to people who were dieters to the participants who did not eat any foods.
The researchers found that people who took Nexium lost an average of 2.3 pounds on average during the three-year study. They also found that people who took a placebo on the first day did not see an increase in heart attack incidence.
"This is a very interesting finding," said Dr. "It indicates that even modest changes to diet and lifestyle may reduce heart disease risk by a small percentage."
Dr. Burt M. Smith, an endocrinologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said the study may help prevent a heart attack and stroke.
"People who take a medication that helps them lose weight may be more likely to be diagnosed with a heart attack or stroke."
In addition, he said, people taking a drug called metformin may be at an increased risk of developing serious side effects, including suicidal thoughts, hospitalization and death.
The drugs also increased the risk of dying from a heart attack and stroke by about 10 percent. This suggests that people who take the drugs may be more likely to die from a heart attack and stroke.
Goldstein said that the study didn't show a relationship between the drugs and an increased risk of death.
"This study does show that people who take these drugs are more likely to die from heart disease," he said.
"This is the first large randomized controlled trial to show that a medication that helps people lose weight may be an effective tool in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke."
Burt Smith said that the study also wasn't a comprehensive analysis of risk of heart disease and stroke, so it was important to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the risk of heart disease and stroke.
"This is important because the data shows that people who take these drugs have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke compared to people who do not take the drugs," said Dr. Smith.
